Detroit Research

Detroit Research is a contemporary journal of Art + Criticism. A group of artists and writers from the Alexandrine Street Seminars and College for Creative Studies alumni across the arts of ceramics / choreography / sculpture / post-studio art / social practice / music / performance / and critical theory felt the need to create a high-caliber publication that captures Detroit’s exciting historical and emerging arts scene through the lens of an evolving cadre of working artists, scholars, art critics, students, and professors.

With help from the Knight Foundation, the College for Creative Studies, friends, and supporters of the arts, Detroit Research was launched in the fall of 2015. In 2016, the publishers asked Who’s That? to come on board as Creative Director for the journal, further elevating the typography and layout design to a level worthy of the contributions from historic and practicing artists across the globe. Featuring a smooth, pastel color palette and a timeless typeface penned by CCS alum-founded OkayType studio, set against bold Helvetica Neue, the updated look of Detroit Research is both muted, yet highly refined. The dusty pink cover leads with a subtle, but unmistakably fresh look, while overall the layouts maintain a strong academic stature.
